Owners information
Vega of Garth was one of the last of the gaff rigged 35ft ft. Sole Bay class to be built. She was built in 1965 by Gordon Armstrong in Scarborough to a high specification for a Liverpool barrister, who kept her from 1965 to 1991 at Garth, next to Bangor, on the Menai Straits in N Wales. Gordon Armstrong is not a well known yacht builder but he had an excellent reputation as a builder of fine fishing boats for use on the Yorkshire coast and the few yachts he did build (before handing over the yard to John Ley, principally known for his Scarborough One Design) were very successful and have lasted well.
The attached extract from a Yachting World annual of the 1960's shows details of the yacht "Golden Eye" from which the Sole Bay class was developed by the designer, J Francis Jones. Vega is virtually identical to Golden Eye save the position of the helm The aft WC compartment has been changed to the port side.
In 1991 Vega was sold out of Garth to the south coast of England, where the next owner somewhat neglected her. The present owner bought her in a poor state in 1996 and took her by road to Pembrokeshire where he undertook a major refit.
The hull was in remarkably good condition but the deck and wheelhouse were rotten and had to be replaced. A new ply and epoxy sheathed deck was fitted and a new coach-roof and wheelhouse were constructed out of mahogany with laminated oak beams. Many hull fastenings were renewed as were all the keel bolts.
A new Iveco/Ford 60 HP engine was fitted with new s/s prop shaft , s/s fuel tanks, filters and piping. All electric wiring was renewed and new batteries fitted, an engine calorifier was fitted together with a pressurized h & c water system and all new navigation instruments were installed. A new solid fuel stove was fitted in place of an old diesel cabin heater and a new Taylors paraffin cooker fitted. In 2005 an outside steering position was added and a new Vetus hydraulic steering system installed
The present owner has sailed Vega in the Irish Sea, the South and East coasts of England and in 2004 undertook a long summer trip in the French canals.
The Sole Bay class have a reputation as being excellent sea boats and with a relatively shallow draft (and with its main mast in a tabernacle) Vega is well able to explore the European inland waterways.
