Remarks:
Built in Hamburg in 1925 by Herman Heidtmann to a Max Oertz design as a fast cruiser for Olympic helmsman Franz Brinkmann. She was bought in 1936 by Major Ralph Blewitt a founder member of the R.O.R.C and father of Mary Blewitt author of navigation books and later the authority on racing rules. The family extensively cruised and raced her until 1950 when she was sold on to Sir James Laing, shipbuilders in Sunderland where she was used as a sail training vessel under the captaincy of Bryan Wilkinson, again racing with distinction. In 1954 the rig was redisgned by Laurent Giles and she was converted from a fractional sloop to a mastheaded cutter. The mast and spars from that conversion remain in near perfect condition 50 years on.She went into private ownership in 1967 mostly based on the Scottish West Coast and four owners late was purchased, by now in a sorry state by the present owners in 1994. Over the next 3 years she was completely rebuilt in Deganwy Dock, all of the original steel frames had perished and were replaced in laminated oak, the steel floors replaced and extended up to the bilge stringers and bolted through the new frames. Some 15% of of the planking was replaced, the hull entirely fastened with copper rivets and the keel bolts drawn and replaced. The sternpost and deadwood were replaced and a large steel shoe fitted over for extra strength, a new Elm rudder was made and fitted with a new steel sock. The decks were removed, most of the deck beams replaced and new afromosia decks into Balcotan glue on 18mm marine ply sub decks. The deck housing had to be condemned and was rebuilt exactly in 28mm afromosia. A new cockpit was fited, the engine was thoroughly checked and refitted onto new steel engine beds. A new TMP hydraulic 2:1 gearboax was fitted. She was completely rewired and the accomodation refitted using the original mahogony furniture where possible. She was surveyed twice during rebuild and again in 2004. The boat was recommisioned in 1997 and since then she has been constantly improved each year with most of the work being carried out at Port Penrhyn. She has been regularly cruised and successfully raced in Classic events by her present owners and was the subject of an article in "Classic Boat" magazine where she also featured as one of the top 100 boats in the magazine. This is a wonderful seaboat, fast and powerful yet easily handled, she has been brought into first class condition, and given a sensible level of maintenance will continue to be admired wherever she goes, for many years to come.
